The taillights have side strakes molded into the plastic to keep airflow attached around the back (and echoed underneath the car for minimum aero drag), an idea first employed in 1976-model mercedes sedans and coupes. While we didn't get to drive in the rain, dust build-up suggests they're effective at keeping the lights clean. deep side panels behind the rear doors arch upward to the rear bumper, again seen more as a muscular ls. The f sport's rear spoiler sets it off, but not as much as the wider rear wheels and tires that better fill the fenders. A faux diffuser panel is framed by stylish exhaust openings, but hybrid models get a full-width rear skirt, blue l badge, and under-car tailpipe exits. apart from the nose, the gs side view most closely resembles the ls, especially around the rear pillars. It's a more formal look that lacks the higher haunches that gave earlier gs models their sporting definition. It's a smooth side with only a fine lower skirt and occasional badges to punctuate it. alloy wheels of 17-inch diameter are standard and 18-inch 10-spoke wheels optional. Luxury package cars, be they gs 450h or gs 350, are distinguished by finer-spoked, almost lace-like 18-inch wheels, and f sport models ride exclusively on 19-inch wheels. Only the volvo s60 is notably smaller in this class. curb weight for the gs350 is listed as 3,795 pounds. Luxury, awd, and hybrid versions will weigh more than that. interiorthe lexus gs cabin is inviting, relaxingly stylish and has a decidedly premium feel. The theme is horizontal with plenty of separation, but not low and wide like a sports car. It's a place where driving and being connected go hand-in-hand, but hopefully not simultaneously. leather is the default upholstery, and that's real wood on the dash, doors, console, perhaps the steering wheel too. The only places this didn't feel like an expensive car are the lower console sides and mid-height door pillars where many makers run the soft-touch surface to the carpeting, and the uninspiring dash clock. matte finish wood looks just as good as the shiny and works much better in a car where sun bounces off glossy surfaces. Other styling refinements, inside and out, distinguish the latest edition. The 2013 lexus lx 570 also gets updated electronics, both for tackling tough terrain and in terms of information and entertainment features. New conveniences have been added to the 2013 lx 570, such as a steering wheel and driver seat that automatically retract for more graceful entries and exits. the lexus lx 570 is a true luxury vehicle, with advanced safety, comfort and quality features. It's also a big, heavy vehicle that can tow big loads, haul heavy cargo, and transport people and gear across great distances in comfort. It uses the same heavy-duty frame and stout powertrain as the toyota land cruiser. Like the land cruiser, the lexus lx 570 is designed for extraordinary versatility and an unusual combination of utility and luxury. These include technological advances such as wide-view parking monitors, adaptive front headlights, and an active damping suspension control system. A mark levinson audio system is also a lexus exclusive, and the interior is built using a higher level of materials and finish. the land cruiser is better equipped for rigorous off-road use; the lx 570, although also highly capable, is aimed more at the luxury car owner who occasionally needs guaranteed control on a snowy road leading to a ski resort, or safe traction on the graded dirt road leading to a ranch house or mountain fishing lodge. A dvd rear-seat entertainment system 2,005) includes dual screens and wireless headphones. A rearview camera comes standard. The grille unifies the look of the lexus models as the others have adopted it. The horizontal bumper bar is still present, but recesses slightly into the spindle-shaped opening, so the grille and not the bumper is by far the front end's dominant visual device. on some lexus models the grille change has been dramatic. Less so on the lx 570: the face it wore for the previous five years included an inverted-trapezoid grille above the bumper and a fairly prominent rectangular air slot below it. With 20/20 hindsight, one can almost see the spindle-grille struggling to suck in the bumper and thrust itself out. The fact that the grille texture hasn't changed all that much adds to a feeling of evolution rather than revolution. The headlight clusters have changed little, if at all, in shape; although the projector-beam lamps and led running lights inside them seem more sharply defined, and the fog lamp recesses are now deeper and more consciously chiseled. the new face adds about half an inch of length and sacrifices some off-road utility, tightening the approach angle from 29 degrees and 31 degrees with the suspension in the normal and high positions, respectively, to 25 and 27 degrees. otherwise, behind the new face is basically the same old box as before. For 2013, wider body side moldings visually flatten the body sides, but lexus says the actual sheet metal hasn't changed. Unchanged, also are the broad mirrors (now with turn signal repeaters), pronounced wheel arches and wide stance that combine to suggest a muscular character. Around back a chrome accent highlights the rear bumper protector. the lx 570 still looks bigger than it is. Bumper-to-bumper, it's almost exactly the same length as the all-new 2013 range rover, while riding on a shorter wheelbase. Perhaps not as distinctive as the range rover, the lexus design strikes us as clean and timeless in a uniquely japanese way. We especially like the new 20-inch wheels with their five split spokes and liquid graphite finish; they look far richer than the rather unimaginative 10-spoke pattern they replace. the lx is by now well-established as a technology showcase for lexus. It was the first lexus to offer a wide-view front and side monitor system for hard-to-see areas. Cameras are located inside the grille and below the right-hand side view mirror, and the radar antenna is located behind the lexus emblem in the front grille. The lx is assembled at the yoshiwara plant, which was revised and revamped to produce the 570. Engines are produced at the tahara manufacturing facility, where the ls sedans are produced. In all, the finished vehicles are inspected three times, testing for such qualities as quietness, steering wheel feel, color matching and door sound accuracy. interiorthe cabin of the lexus lx reflects japanese ideas of simplicity, strict attention to detail, and functionality as a form of luxury. That said, some new colors and surfaces keep the design fresh for 2013. Electronic conveniences have been enhanced as well. there are two standard leather colors to choose from: black or parchment both come with mahogany wood trim. The difference in atmosphere is dramatic: the black suggests a dark, cozy, intimate den; the parchment a bright and cheery sunroom. Either way, the detail work on the leather, trim panels and dash area is in keeping with lexus standards. Stitching on the seats is conspicuously uniform and stands up to focused inspection. The luxury package upgrades to semi-aniline leather, which is a dye process that has the benefit of more consistent color characteristics, and extends the mahogany trim to the inside door switch plates. there's more brightwork on the dash than before, but it's now darker in tone and it's still used judiciously. All-new, with bold styling, refined ride and interior. introductionthe lexus ls lineup has been completely redesigned for the 2013 model year. The all-new 2013 lexus ls uses the same powertrain that it's been using since 2006, a sweet and silky all-aluminum 4. 6-liter v8 now making 386 horsepower, mated to the world's first (in 2007) 8-speed automatic transmission. Lexus calls it vvt-ie, for variable valve timing with intelligence and electronically controlled intake. The ls 460 gets an epa-estimated 16/24 mpg city/highway. also redesigned is the 2013 lexus ls 600hl hybrid, a long-wheelbase model that uses a 5. 0-liter v8 mated to a pair of electric motors and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. We found it incredibly smooth and, with its huge electric torque, it will accelerate nearly as fast as the new 2013 ls 460, even though the hybrid is a lot heavier. The hybrid is considerably more expensive, however, and it gets an epa-estimated 19 mpg city, so don't buy it for the gas mileage. The hybrid is very clean, though, earning a ulevii emissions rating from the federal environmental protection agency. lexus claims 15 technology firsts for the 2013 ls, with 50 percent of its parts being totally changed from the previous model. Styling-wise, the new spindle grille is striking, like stacked trapezoids, and with the f sport model the grille looks hot with black mesh. The hood carries a bold narrow bulge, and the front lights are available with led bulbs that change the car's character at night. The ls 460 didn't feel like a serious luxury car to us without this option. the ls 460 is 7. 2 inches longer than the bmw 640i, on a wheelbase that's 4. 5 inches longer, but doesn't look it or feel it; the bmw looks longer because it has a longer hood and sleeker roofline that's about 6 inches lower. The lexus does have a shapely roofline, sweeping to the rear deck, under which there are twin trapezoidal pipes that suggest power. We found the back seat of the ls 460l much roomier than that of the standard model, much more so than the specifications suggest. the seats are substantially improved over those in the previous version, and the climate control is more sophisticated to a fault. A broad selection of wood interior trim or aluminum trim is available. A super-wide display screen is mounted high on the dash near eye level for controlling navigation, audio, phone, entertainment and it's easy to read, even in bright sunlight. The remote touch interface, like a computer mouse, controls things quickly and intuitively. The aluminum knobs are clean, simple, easy to reach and easy to operate. The ambient interior lighting is totally adjustable. There are great soft spots for both elbows for the driver. The knees also contact soft places, by careful design. the ls460 f sport model has the best comfort, speed, handling, looks and fun. Besides more seat bolstering and a black spindle grille, it comes with more powerful six-piston brembo brakes, but engine power is the same. the ls 460 awd all-wheel-drive model is slower, being 418 pounds heavier and having 26 less horsepower thanks to a different exhaust system. Its all-season tires don't grip in the summer like the summer tires on the ls 460 or f sport do. we found the ls delivered a superb ride and impeccable silence. Advancements in sound isolation minimize wind noise while other innovations reduce road noise. five dynamic modes are available to adjust ride and handling and other dynamics. The 8-speed automatic doesn't perform as sharply as the transmission in the german cars do, however. dazzling electronic features, some of them optional, include night vision that can spot a pedestrian (but not a deer) beyond the range of the headlights, and apply the brakes automatically and stop the car in time if the speed is 25 mph or below. lineupthe 2013 lexus ls line-up includes seven models: the ls 460 with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the long-wheelbase ls 460l, the sportier ls 460 f sport, and the ls 600hl hybrid. The non-hybrids all use the 4. 6-liter v8 and 8-speed automatic transmission. The v8 makes 386 horsepower with rear-wheel drive, 360 hp with all-wheel drive. The hybrid is a 5. 0-liter v8 mated to a pair of electric motors and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Pricing was not available when tested. the ls 460 and ls 460 awd come standard with a coil spring rear suspension with electric power steering and three driving modes. The f sport adds the air suspension with variable gear ratio steering, which is available as a package for the standard ls 460, and five modes. The f sport gets a distinctive grille, bolstered seats, bigger brakes, and sharper shifting. walkaroundeven being 6 inches higher than the bmw 640i, the coefficient of drag of the ls 460 is an impressive 0. 26. The new grille is striking, with a bold shape like a cross between a bowtie and lightning bolt. We wish the chrome enclosing the six-sided grille weren't there; at least the f sport uses black eggcrate in the grille, as opposed to the horizontal bars on the plain ls 460. The shape of the grille deserves a brushed stainless or aluminum surround, classier than chrome. Or all black on a light colored car, like the white nova. there's a bitchin' bulge in the hood, long and narrow and pointed like a vector. The headlamps, sharp and flowing, are the same with either base xenon or led bulbs inside, but at night the beams change the car's entire image and look. directly under the headlights, at the bottom front corners of the car, there are air intakes shaped to balance and contrast the headlights. The thick front bumper passes through the middle of the grille, where it's black and disguised. the roofline sweeps stylishly over shapely pillars to the rear deck. The downward lines at the rear of the car point outward to make it look wide (secure and balanced with a low center of gravity); on the previous ls 460 they pointed down and in, to make the car look narrow. The tip-off is the chrome surrounding the windows. In fact, look around, there's chrome trim everywhere, from rockers to door handles. We think there should be an option to get body-colored and not chrome trim. Standard driver adjustment is power 16-way with 4-way lumbar. The cushions in the seat and back have been improved to keep the driver from slipping forward and also to maintain correct posture at the pelvis. They have an automatic setting that links it to the temperature setting in the cabin. In the non-bolstered standard ls 460, the seatback didn't grip enough to stop back-sliding on freeway cloverleaves, not even driving hard. If we had to buy an f sport to get the good seats, then we would. despite the roofline being nearly 6 inches higher than the bmw 640i, there's 4 inches less headroom in front. We figure it could only mean a higher seating position in the ls 460, and therefore better visibility of the road, especially since the hood isn't as long as the bmw's. overall, the climate control system is so sophisticated that it takes many pages in the manual to describe. But as often happens, they go too far. We hate it when that happens. f sport interior trim is aluminum, including the pretty pedals, with classy suede-like headliner. F sport is only available with black leather. The steering wheel, thick in diameter, is all leather-wrapped, as opposed to wood. there are five wood trim packages for the ls 460, including walnut, matte burled ash, bamboo, and the new shimamoku, which means striped in japanese. At the press launch, lexus showed a video of the making of a shimamoku steering wheel, and it's amazing the amount of work that goes into each wheel, 67 processes in 38 days. lexus calls their gauges optitron meters, so they must be special, alt.
